Grey-headed Flying Fox workshop proceedings

This page links to the Proceedings of the Grey-headed Flying Fox workshop held at the University of Sydney, 29th April 2000 and edited by Greg Richards, Secretary, Australasian Bat Society Inc.

The following summary extracted from the Proceedings (written by Harry Parnaby) gives a brief overview on the current conservation status of Grey headed flying foxes:

"...The Grey-headed Flying-fox unequivocally qualifies for listing as Vulnerable on Schedule 2 of the TSC Act in NSW. (This also applies to the Black Flying-fox). Vulnerable listings arise both from both the IUCN criteria (as applied to NSW) and on the criteria of Lunney et al. (1996) adopted for the Endangered Fauna (Interim Protection) Act 1991, which gave rise to lists adopted for the TSC Act. I suggest that the IUCN category of Endangered is more appropriate than Vulnerable for the national status of the Grey-headed Flying-fox, and I present a case for a regional (NSW) listing of Critically Endangered. A listing of Endangered on Schedule 1 of the TSC Act could be more appropriate than Vulnerable. Failure to list the Grey-headed Flying-fox would be inconsistent with IUCN criteria and the criteria giving rise to current Vulnerable listed species on the TSC Act, and would be inconsistent with the objects of the TSC Act..."
